Homeschool Days 2010 at
The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History

Dates: September 13, October 4, November 1, & December 6
Time: 10:00am to 2:00pm (EST)
Special admission rates: $5 per person, free for children three and under.

Reservations are recommended but not required

Homeschooled students of all ages can now explore the Southern Museum's exhibits for a special rate. Attendees participate in guided tours, hands-on activities and make-and-take projects.
The Way We Worked
October 4, 2010 •10 AM — 2 PM

Our traveling Smithsonian Exhibit, “They Way We Worked,” traces the evolution of work and the workforce in America over the last century.
American Indian
November 1, 2010 •10 AM — 2 PM
What are the indigenous Native American tribes of Georgia? We’ll learn about them and see some authentic Native American artifacts that were discovered in Georgia.

An 1861 Winter
December 6, 2010 •10 AM — 2 PM
Winters were very different for Civil War soldiers and their families than they are for us in the 21st century. We will talk about the differences and how Southerners coped with harsh winters in the 19th century.

Membership is available for the discounted price of $5 this year. The COMPASS support group seeks to provide children with more opportunities to be with and form friendships with other homeschooling children. We seek to provide homeschooling parents with an avenue for networking and forming support systems with other homeschoolers through our newsletter, our online support group and email loop, co-op classes, field
trips, park days, skate days, 4-H, homeschool clubs, homeschool soccer teams, and other annual events such as our annual Kick-Off and Curriculum Fair.

Any family who homeschools or is considering homeschooling their children may become a member of COMPASS by completing this membership form and paying the $5 membership fee. Benefits of membership include: one laminated educator card per family, quarterly hard copy or e-newsletters, free “Services” ads, discounted business ads, yahoogroup, facebook group memberships (members only), discounted table at annual book sale, and access to organized field trips.

G.C.H.E. Reorganizes, now COMPASS

G.C.H.E. recently changed its name to reflect the larger area that receives homeschool suppport. Our new name is COMPASS Christian Home Educators of NE Alabama.

The membership fee for the 2010-2011 year will be $5, but will increase next year.

It was decided to close the GCHE yahoogroup and open a COMPASS yahoogroup, and do the same with the Facebook group. Only paying members will be allowed access to the online support groups.

GCHE Reorganization Meeting

The Compass, a GCHE newsletter for homeschoolers, is now at Gadsden Christian Bookstore and Coosa Outfitters. It will be available for Monday's GCHE Book Sale at the Gadsden UMC.

Caleb Lapsley wins Key Club International Board Seat

Caleb Lapsley, a local homeschooled student, was elected to the 2010-2011 International Board during the Key Club International Convention, recently held in Memphis. He will be an International Trustee for the Key Club for the next 12 months.

GCHE Reoganization Meeting

There will be a reorganizational meeting for GCHE on August 4, 2010 at the Resource Center at Pathways Academy from 1-3 p.m. If you are interested in working hard to make GCHE a better resource for homeschoolers, please attend.

GCHE KICKOFF August 18th

The GCHE Kickoff will take place on August 18 at RBC Park (same as last year) from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Bring your calendars and your checkbooks so that you can sign up for field trips, clubs, and your GCHE membership. May Caruthers will be coordinating a picnic under the pavilion and will post more details on the GCHE yahoo-group.

PATHWAYS ACADEMY'S SR. BETA CLUB WINS NATIONALS!

The Pathways Academy Sr. Beta Club placed first in the Banner Competition. Their banner will grace the National Beta Office for the next year. They also placed 2nd for the Community Service.

GCHE BOOK SALE!

Mark your calendars for our book sale! JULY 26 Monday from 2 until 4pm. Sellers can set up at 1:30pm at the First United Methodist in downtown Gadsden. $3 table fee. You may pay three dollars before or after the sale at the check-in table.

Homeschool Come and See Day at JSU

JSU is hosting a "Homeschool Come and See Day" on August 3rd, 2010 from 9am-1pm. All interested families with students in 9th-12th grade should RSVP by July 30th.

Kyle Coleman, son of Joey and Dominga Coleman, participated in the Alabama Music Teachers Association state auditions at the University of Montevallo this spring and received the outstanding rating with honorable mention. Kyle is a piano student of Mrs. Kathy Balenger Thompson and will begin studying under Dr. Susie Francis Dempsey in the fall.

GCHE's Kick-off will most likely be in September. If you have a club, activity or field trip you would like to promote - plan on having sign-up sheets, information hand-outs and envelopes for money (if necessary) ready.

April is working hard to get the book sale organized for July. Date and time to be posted soon.

GCHE needs new coordinators for Skate Day (call and set up skate days with the skating rink and have monthly signups for a "mom in charge") and Bowling Day (POC to collect money and sort of keep an eye on the group).
